Canadian dog food brands
Dog food is where "Canadian" gets murkiest. A brand can be owned in Canada and manufactured in the United States, or owned by a multinational and produced in an Ontario plant. Those are different facts and this page keeps them apart. Each brand below carries its ownership and its manufacturing separately, with the source we checked and the date we checked it.
Three different questions
A Canadian company is not the same thing as a Canadian-made product, and neither is the same thing as a foreign product you can buy from a Canadian shop. We record those separately for every brand, because collapsing them into one label is how buyers get misled. Where a company has not said something, we say that instead of guessing.
8 brands with a Canadian connection
Corey Nutrition
Fredericton, New Brunswick
Canadian-owned, made in Canada.
Yes. Corey Nutrition is a family-owned company based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and it manufactures its pet food in its own facility there. It describes itself as Atlantic Canada’s only commercial pet food manufacturer.
Horizon Pet Nutrition
Rosthern, Saskatchewan
Canadian-owned, made in Canada.
Yes. Horizon is owned by three Saskatchewan owners and manufactures in plants it owns and operates in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. Its ingredient sourcing claim is North American rather than Canadian, which is a meaningful difference.
Smack Pet Food
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Canadian-owned, made in Canada.
Canadian company in Winnipeg, and it says its food is made in Canada, but only on a promotional line. We could not find a page on its own site naming the facility where the food is produced.
Open Farm
Toronto, Ontario
Canadian-owned, partly made in Canada.
Canadian company, largely not Canadian manufacturing. Open Farm states it is a Canadian company headquartered in Toronto, and that its own manufacturing facility is in the United States. It says it also partners with facilities in Canada and Iceland, but does not say which product lines are made where.
Big Country Raw
Smithville, Ontario
Ownership not stated, made in Canada.
Yes for manufacturing. Big Country Raw states that it produces all of its raw pet food in Smithville, Ontario. Its founders are named on its About page, but it does not use the words family-owned or independent, so we have not stated its ownership structure.
Red Dog Blue Kat
Port Coquitlam, British Columbia
Ownership not stated, made in Canada.
Yes for manufacturing. Red Dog Blue Kat makes its raw food in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. The company has taken outside growth investment led by Forage Capital Partners; it describes this as a funding round, not an acquisition, and does not state the size of the stake.
Petcurean
Ownership not stated, partly made in Canada.
Partly. Petcurean states that its Go! Solutions and Now Fresh dry kibble is manufactured in Canada by Elmira Pet Products, while its wet food is made in Wisconsin, its Boosters in Thailand and its Benefit Chews in Illinois. Whether a Petcurean product is made in Canada depends entirely on which product you buy.
Royal Canin
Guelph, Ontario
Not Canadian-owned, partly made in Canada.
No, and yes, depending which question you are asking. Royal Canin is owned by Mars, so it is not a Canadian company. But it built a factory and its Canadian head office in Guelph, Ontario in 2008, and says that plant makes dry cat and dog food. It is a foreign-owned brand with real Canadian manufacturing, which is exactly the case a simple Canadian or not-Canadian label gets wrong.
Looking for a Canadian alternative?
These are brands Canadians search for by name. Each page says who owns it, where it is actually manufactured, and which Canadian options exist in the same category. A brand can appear both here and in the list above: Royal Canin is owned by Mars and still makes dry food in Guelph, Ontario.
- Is Royal Canin Canadian? Owned by Mars, Incorporated.
- Is Blue Buffalo Canadian? Owned by General Mills, Inc..
Know a brand we are missing?
We add a brand once we can read an origin or manufacturing statement on the company’s own site, its packaging, or a government record. If you run a Canadian pet business, you can list it in our Canadian directory.
